EWE NETZ – Data Strategy Assessment
Data Maturity Assessment, including an organizational model, governance framework, and prioritized roadmap for a regional electric grid operator.
Data as a Strategic Lever for the Energy Transition
As a regional distribution network operator for electricity, gas, and telecommunications in northwestern Germany, EWE NETZ GmbH relies on data as a key resource. The goal: to optimize existing network processes and lay the foundation for innovative, data-driven business models.
For this reason, the company sought an external assessment of its existing data landscape as well as clear recommendations for establishing a centralized data organization.
The maturity level of the data was to be determined across all relevant dimensions. From this, a concrete target vision with a roadmap was to be derived.
First, analyze the maturity level; then, develop an organizational model
In an eight-week Data & Analytics Readiness Assessment, we put the status quo through its paces. Based on in-depth information analyses, targeted stakeholder interviews ranging from the operational level to management, and an interactive on-site workshop, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the maturity level. Based on our maturity analysis, we developed a tailor-made organizational model for centralized data governance: a hub-and-spoke organizational model with clear role profiles, such as Product Owner, Governance Lead, or Tech Lead.
We provided concrete recommendations for integrating the technologies. In doing so, we established architectural and integration guidelines for Snowflake, SAP, and Power BI to support a future-proof data mesh approach. A binding roadmap, including milestones and a KPI framework, provides EWE NETZ with the confidence to proceed with the transformation.

The Challenge of Heterogeneous Data Sources
EWE NETZ faced the challenge of establishing the right governance structures to drive the transition toward a data-driven corporate culture.
This required a strategic realignment: we identified the appropriate governance and structures to pave the way for a data-driven corporate culture with highly heterogeneous data sources.
The workshop helped us tie up a lot of loose ends and showed us which areas we need to pay particular attention to.
