MaibornWolff develops assistance robots for Ulrichswerkstätten

AI-supported robotics in everyday working life

This is precisely what our “KiRo4LeMi” project at the Ulrichswerkstätten in Schwabmünchen is all about. Alex Hofmann (CTO MaibornWolff) took a look at the whole thing in practice with our project manager Albrecht Lottermoser. At the Ulrichswerkstätten, small parts are assembled, screws are tightened, and components are precisely positioned. These are tasks that can be physically demanding for people with physical limitations.

You have to see it in everyday working life to understand what this project means. I am very happy that we are part of it. You notice immediately: technology is creating real benefits here!
Alex Hofmann, CTO MaibornWolff

The assistant robot is located directly at the workplace and provides targeted support for individual work steps, such as holding, positioning, or repeating movements. The goal is not automation, but rather to promote independence. We also spoke with Jenny, who works with the robot almost every day. She talks about a reluctance that many people are familiar with from the news:

A smiling woman wearing glasses and a cap sits in a wheelchair.
At trade fairs, I often notice skepticism because people hear that robots take away jobs. But that's not the case with us. It supports us and helps us to work more independently.

Joint research project coordinated by Fraunhofer

The project consortium consists of Fraunhofer IGCV, Roboception GmbH, MaibornWolff GmbH, and Ulrichswerkstätten (CAB Caritas Augsburg Betriebsträger gGmbH), where the application will be implemented. MaibornWolff's tasks: We are responsible for the conception and design of the living personas and their alignment with real people. We are also focusing on the digital design of the assistance system and designing its modular software structure.

A person is wearing a dark blue polo shirt with red and blue stripes on the collar.
With the help of generative AI, we generate synthetic data, known as living personas. We use these for the design process of an assistant robot, but also for the operation and evaluation of the system.

Why MaibornWolff?

As one of the most innovative IT service providers with a great passion for AI, we focus entirely on the project business and individual software development - without our own products. To stay at the forefront, we continuously invest in our team of digital technology engineers and develop digital solutions that are well thought-out, efficient and reduced to the essentials.

Our principle: simplicity instead of complexity. We only develop what is really needed - tailor-made, useful and reliable. Our results speak for themselves. With over 800 large-scale systems and more than 10,000 person-years of experience in high-end software engineering, we are one of the few who can reliably implement even the largest and most complex IT landscapes. Thanks to close partnerships with leading hyperscalers, our customers operate their solutions in today's most modern and powerful environments.

Less technology. Better Business.
