Frequently asked questions about the accessibility audit
What is an accessibility audit?
An A11y audit assesses whether a digital application is accessible to people with disabilities. Structure, usability, perceptibility, and robustness are tested—manually, with tools, and based on the WCAG. The goal is to produce a clear, prioritized list of specific improvements.
Are accessibility audits required by law?
No, an audit itself is not mandatory. Accessibility, on the other hand, is: BITV 2.0 applies to public bodies, and BFSG will apply to many digital products and services from private providers from June 2025. An audit is the standard way to reliably check and verify compliance with the requirements.
How is accessibility tested?
Testing is carried out using keyboards, screen readers, zoom functions, contrast checks, automated tools, and manual checks. Evaluation is based on WCAG criteria. The aim is to achieve real usability, which is why technical testing, usage simulations, and qualitative assessments by experienced experts are combined.
What is WCAG compliance?
WCAG compliance means that a website or application meets the international accessibility standards of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. In Germany, Level AA is usually required. The WCAG define testable criteria for the perceptibility, operability, understandability, and robustness of digital content.
