Next Reality Lab – Experience, Understand, and Evolve XR
Immersion instead of just information
To truly grasp Virtual and Augmented Reality, you have to experience it. At MaibornWolff, we initially approached XR technologies like Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) from a development perspective – exploring, for example, how to write efficient, robust code to provide a safe and stable foundation for the experience.
But it quickly became clear: great XR experiences don’t come from technology alone. They require thoughtful design, consistent interaction, and a finely tuned interplay of visuals, sound, and spatial perception. Only when all elements mesh seamlessly does true immersion – and real impact – emerge.
The projects in the Next Reality Lab show exactly what that impact can look like.
Technology Meets Experience – in the Next Reality Lab
To make immersive experiences tangible, we created the Next Reality Lab – a space for showcases with immersive technologies that speaks to both beginners and experienced XR users.
Here, visitors can try a wide variety of devices and systems – from the Meta Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro, and HTC Vive to the HoloLens, Varjo XR-3, or iPads with AR marker tracking. Our goal: to stay at the cutting edge and make innovation something you can feel.
Some highlights from the Lab illustrate the many ways XR is already being used today:
Case: Dr. Isabel Cruz – When AI Brings Knowledge to Life
How can information be conveyed emotionally?
With Dr. Isabel Cruz, digital knowledge transfer becomes an interactive experience.
As a hyper-realistic MetaHuman, developed in Unreal Engine and equipped with voice and conversational AI, she shares archaeological knowledge in real dialogue situations – right on the screen.
A project from the Next Reality Lab that shows how artificial intelligence, storytelling, and immersive technology can work hand in hand.
Emotional. Real-time. Impressive.
Case: The Social VR Room – Rethinking Collaboration
XR can do more than just share knowledge – it can redefine real collaboration.
In the Social VR Room for the Meta Quest 3, teams meet as avatars in an interactive space.
They share videos, communicate via voice chat, and take part in meetings that are not only efficient but also surprisingly engaging.
Whether for workshops, pitches, or brainstorming sessions – the Social VR Room shows how social closeness can be created in a digital space.
Case: Mixed-Reality Knee – Making Medicine Tangible
In the medical field, XR also offers entirely new learning opportunities.
Our mixed-reality prototype for medical training – currently patent-pending – combines a life-sized, sensor-based, 3D-printed knee model with immersive visualizations via a Varjo headset.
Move the physical model, and the virtual knee of the overlaid patient moves in perfect sync.
Through an interface, tissue layers can be shown or hidden – for a deeper, more intuitive understanding of complex knee injuries.
Developed specifically for use in medical education.
Hands-on. Interactive. Immersive.
