inCTRL Solutions: Modernization of the IoT platform for water treatment plants
Since July 2023
Our project: modernize software technically and enable new features fort he users
opsCTRL is an IoT platform for water treatment plants. The platform enables central management and monitoring of water quality, plant status, and process steps. By integrating maintenance and tour data, maintenance tasks can be optimized.
The aim of the project is to technically modernize the existing software and enable new features for the users.
Our client improves the efficiency of water infrastructures
inCTRL is a globally recognized expert team that develops creative digital solutions for water infrastructure.
They combine classical engineering knowledge with data analysis and modern software development to provide innovative tools for operators, technicians, and engineers.
With deep experience in optimizing wastewater and biogas processes, they strive to promote sustainable water use and improve the efficiency of water infrastructures through intelligent digital platforms.

Maintaining the current system while deploying new features
Maintaining and integrating new features was challenging because we had to continue maintaining the current system while deploying new features. Therefore, we are modernizing the existing software, improving code quality, and expanding test coverage.
On the customer side, we face the challenge of significantly improving the efficiency and reliability of their water infrastructure operations. Our software must run stably in order to meet customer expectations in terms of availability and performance.
By implementing modern development practices such as microservices, architectural best practices, and automated quality assurance, we ensure that our solutions meet the required standards. This enables inCTRL to respond more quickly to customer requests.
Establishment of a Data Warehouse and a robust software infrastructure
A central success is the establishment of a Data Warehouse. This solution enables our customer to process data effectively and seamlessly.
In addition, we have successfully identified crucial core services and components to be rebuilt and developed clear strategies for their modernization. Our detailed plans consider technical requirements and structural improvements to ensure a robust and future-proof software infrastructure for the customer. These have already been partially implemented.

Testing, CI/CD pipelines and automation accelerate software development
Optimized testing and automation: We have expanded the test coverage for existing functions and introduced modern testing methods to increase the reliability of our software.
Software components are of high code quality, fully tested, and run stably
We bring opsCTRL to a state of good resilience, maintainability, and further development capability, so that new features can be integrated into the products faster and the customer benefit is fully realized.
Short-term goals include avoiding incidents and ensuring that critical existing software runs stably.
All newly written software components are of high code quality, fully tested, and run stably. Architectural best practices should be incorporated, and a strong knowledge exchange established to increase team resilience.
We have successfully added new, cleanly implemented features to the existing codebase.
By applying modern development practices, we ensure that these new features are robust and maintainable and provide real added value for our customer.
The test coverage for existing functions will be expanded. The right technical domains for microservices will be identified to abstract functions.
Furthermore, quality assurance and infrastructure will be further automated.
Building up a software-development team within inCTRL
Taking over the application from the previous IT service provider and being able to understand the complexity of the system has been one of the main challenges. At the same time, we’ve been building up a software-development team within inCTRL to allow them to develop and maintain the system themselves.
The creation of a strong and well-trained development team and the promotion of intensive knowledge exchange strengthen the resilience and flexibility of our team to efficiently solve customer-specific requirements.

Through the implementation of Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines and automated quality assurance, we can test and deploy code changes quickly and efficiently. These automations increase the speed of our development processes and allow our developers to focus more on innovative and high-quality code.
